Yorkshire Coast (6): Runswick Bay

Yorkshire Coast Trip; Day 11 (Mon 26th April 2021)

On our final day of the trip, we left our friends who headed south, to visit Runswick Bay before heading home ourselves.

Runswick Bay is a small village to the north of Whitby. It is stunningly beautiful and very reminiscent of villages in Cornwall. It featured as one of the sites recently visited by Susan Calman in her motorhome “Helen Mirren”, in an episode of “Susan Calman’s Grand Days Out” where she found the road down to the village frighteningly steep.

After parking Fufu in the car park above the village, we explored the village itself. Many houses, almost built on top of each other in a similar way to Robin Hoods Bay and Staithes, made the experience very interesting. Narrow paths and steep stone stairs which seemed to run through gardens and right next to houses, were everywhere.

Runswick Bay has a fine beach, but the following photograph was taken from the far end of it from the village, where there are large areas of bedrock exposed.

Like parts of the Dorset coast, you can find fossils in this area, as well as the famous Whitby Jet. A local man was searching on the beach for this semi-precious jem stone. He said that he found it a good way to save for his holidays, selling the proceeds of this endevours to the jewellers in Whitby. He showed me some examples, but they looked just like common shale or even coal, of which there is an abundance. Don’t think I will be giving up the day job just yet.
