Dorset and Devon Coast (4): Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth

Dorset and Devon Coast Trip, Day 6 (Thu 13th May 2021)

We stayed the night at Manor Farm, a site near Seaton.  It was raining again this morning, so we decided to take Fufu to Beer, the next village on the coast, to the west.

Beer:

We spent a very pleasant morning in Beer, if a little damp from the regular rain showers.

Beer is a small, attractive village which occupies a cliff-top location with a steep road which ends in a slipway onto a shingle beach.  There are several craft and art shops in addition to the usual range of merchandise.

The historical economic activity of the village is fishing and there were several fishing boats hauled onto the beach.

Sidmouth:

We spent the afternoon in Sidmouth, another beautiful seaside town with high cliffs and a nice beach.  We had parked to the west of the town, near to Connaught Gardens, which were interesting.  They overlook the sea and the coastline further to the west.  From the gardens, you can descend a wooden staircase to the pathway along the top of the sea defences, which run along the base of the cliffs into the town.

The cliffs are made from a soft sandstone, which bears the carved graffiti which records many a romantic liaison.

On the road back up to the car park there are two very impressive thatched houses, built in the mid 19th century, which have amazing sea views. The first of these is “Rock Cottage”, currently a hotel, and the second one is “The Beacon”.
