Dorset and Devon Coast (8): Torcross, Kingsbridge and Salcombe

Dorset and Devon Coast Trip, Day 10, (Mon 17th May 2021)

Torcross:

Moving on from Dartmouth, we were booked onto a site near Salcombe, Ilton Farm.  The journey took us along the coast and after a steep descent to sea level, the coast road runs spectacularly along a causeway between Slapton Ley (a national nature reserve) and Slapton Sands.  The small village of Torcross, lies at the end of the causeway which between heavy rain showers, we explored briefly.

The Start Bay Inn

At the end of the carpark, behind the Start Bay Inn pub, there is an American Sherman Tank which was recovered from the sea.  The tank commemorates the dreadful American loss of life in a tragic rehearsal for the D-day landings.

Kingsbridge:

Kingsbridge is a pleasant small market town, built on a hill, inland from the Kingsbridge Estuary.  From the quayside, the main shopping street runs up the hill and has many independent small shops.

Salcombe:

Our site for the night had fine views over Salcombe, but unfortunately it is about two miles walk to the village centre.

Fufu and Homer on site (the two motorhomes near the building)

Jeeves and Michelle had arrived before us and had parked their motorhome, Homer, next to the pitch left for us, they had then walked into Salcome. We were a bit hesitant about the two miles walk to the village as we had done a fair bit of walking already, but it was well worth the effort; the place is simply stunning.
