Dorset and Devon Coast (12): Dartmoor

Dorset and Devon Coast Trip, Day 14 (Fri 21st May 2021)

The weather forecast for today said that there would be more of the same heavy rain and gale force winds as yesterday, but worse.  They were completely accurate.

It can be “grim down south” too

Our journey to tonight’s stop-over at Sampford Peverell, near Tiverton, left us a choice of the high road and the low road.  Given the weather conditions, the low road was tempting, but did not promise as much of interest as the route across Dartmoor, so that is the route we chose.

Dartmoor Tors in the Rain

Dartmoor can be bleak at the best of times.  It has a bleak beauty which I find very attractive; different from the moorland areas in the north of England, near to home.  The weather conditions enhanced the beauty for me and we stopped frequently on half-empty car parks across the moor to take in the view and occasionally dive out to take a photograph.  Truly breath-taking in both senses of the phrase.

Dartmoor Tors

Many hills, or “Tors” have stony summits and paths leading to them.  There were a surprising number of very hardy souls who were braving the elements, but this was not for us on a day like today.  The rain was extreme and nearly horizontal.

On the moor, we were fortunate to see one of the Dartmoor Ponies with a foal, sheltering in the lee of a wall.  The poor thing looked freezing cold, but we did see it suckling and standing close to its mother.

We also called at Two Bridges, and Postbridge.

The Old Bridge at Two Bridges
The Clapper Bridge and Stone Bridge at Postbridge
Fufu at Postbridge

Our overnight resting place at Sampford Peverell was pleasant and sheltered, but we did not explore the area further due to the continued downpour.  A good time was had though, despite the weather.
