As a change from our usual trips into the countryside, we had been invited to join Alison’s son Mark, his girlfriend Emma, her mum and partner, for a meal on Saturday evening at a Chinese restaurant, near Rochdale. Rather than return home afterwards, it made sense to take our bed with us and stay overnight in Fufu, parked on a neighbour’s driveway. A most enjoyable evening was followed by a good night’s sleep.
Hollingworth Lake
Sunday morning did not promise much in terms of fine weather, but we decided to go for a walk around Hollingworth Lake, which is man-made, 130 acres, and originally built to provide water for the Rochdale Canal but developed as a resort in the 1860s.

The lake can be viewed by passing traffic on the M62 motorway, high above and to the southeast. Motorway travel is often disorienting, and I have looked down many times and wondered where this lake is.

There is a good path around the lake and walking around it was a popular activity despite the weather. There were many dogs being exercised and even a scarlet macaw being taken for a walk.

The lake is the home of the Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club who were holding races whilst we were there.

Looks a great place, love the photo with the motorway in the distance.

Yes, it is surprising how close the motorway seems from the lake, but it looks further on the map. The sailing made me wish I was still a boat owner; they looked to be having fun.
