Sandbach, Cheshire

We joined our friends Jeeves and Michelle for the weekend, staying at Fields Farm Fisheries, which is a Camping and Caravanning Club Certified Location.

The site has many small lakes for anglers to drown their worms and maggots; a hobby I have never really understood, but it is a very pleasant place with a plenty of wildlife around.

The owner of the site has a bird feeding station near to one of the smaller lakes, which was popular with small birds; In just a short time, I saw goldfinches, great tits, blue tits, robins, long tailed tits, house sparrows and dunnock:

The walk into Sandbach town centre was around a mile from the site. A bright, cold and breezy day, but it did feel like spring is on its way.

Sandbach is quite an old settlement with some early Christian crosses in the old market square. According to Wikipedia, the towns inhabitants were converted to Christianity in the 7th century and the town is listed in the Domesday book in 1086, at which time there was noted to be a church.

There are many very ornate buildings in the town centre which give evidence to wealth and prosperity in Victorian times:

The Town Hall and indoor market (1889)
The Cheshire Pie stall seemed to be doing well
Facade and chimney detail of the Swan Hotel
The old savings bank building, built 1834
Hightown Drinking Fountain
Sandbach Literary Institute, complete with “tourist” and dog
This thatched inn was built in 1634

Like many similar towns, there are now many charity shops, which Michelle and Alison visited, shopping for children’s books and toys. Afterwards, we had a very fine and reasonably priced lunch in the busy Market Tavern, where there were a good number of Blackpool FC supporters stopping off on their way to visit Stoke, where they were playing.

After lunch, we wandered around the local park which was full of the signs of spring.
