Another weekend away with Fufu our motorhome; this time staying at Pound Farm Park, Crook, the venue for one of the Camping and Caravanning Club meets.

The site is in a beautiful and quiet location. Not much to do hereabouts but go for walks, so the fact that the weather was warm and sunny was a real bonus.
After setting up, we went for a walk down through the village and up to St Catherine’s church tower, the only part of the original church standing. On a hillside, quite a way above the village, it seemed out of place in a field, surrounded by sheep.

The tower was built around 1620, but the church to which it had been added, pre-dated it by around 100 years. Unfortunately the church had to be demolished in 1887 due to “structural defects”. You can see the current church in the valley below.

There was a real feeling of spring in the air as well as many more obvious signs:

There is not much to Crook itself, but what there is, is very attractive:

Apparently in times past, any stray livestock would be put in the pinfold (or penfold), where their owners were obliged to pay a fine to retrieve them.
The following day, we walked from the site to Ashes, a small hamlet to the north. Our route took us through some beautiful countryside.

When passing through Ashes Coppice, we also saw some long-tailed tits, a buzzard and a great spotted woodpecker, but sadly got no photographs. There was also much evidence of the damage caused by recent storms Eunice, Franklin and Gladys:

On our way back to the site, we passed this interesting construction; perhaps a child’s den.

We spent the remaining part of the day sitting in the sun, drinking tea, listening to the crows and the sheep. Bliss!
