Keswick and N. Cumbria (1): Castlerigg, Keswick and Friars Crag

Friday 13th and Saturday 14th May, 2022

Swiftly following our return from France, we took Fufu away for a few days to Keswick, staying at Castlerigg Farm Campsite with the Camping and Caravanning Club, Lakeland District Association.

Castlerigg Stone Circle – Friday 13th May

After setting up on-site, we walked through to Castlerigg Stone Circle, which is quite close to the site. On the way, we passed through some stunning scenery and saw a beautiful mare and foal:

Castlerigg stone circle is managed by English Heritage. It is thought to be around 5000 years old and is one of about 300 stone circles in the UK, the best known being Stonehenge. It is in a stunning location though.

What seems to be the entrance to the stone circle.

There were two young women seated in the middle of the circle. On being asked why, they told me that they were using tarot cards and, it also being Friday 13th, they took the opportunity to use the location to find some inner calm. Feeling a little confused by their logic, but taking the hint, I left them to continue.

A fine view on the way back to the site.

Keswick Town and Friars Crag – Saturday 14th May

Saturday is market day in the thriving town of Keswick and it did not disappoint. We walked down the steep and long hill through woodland and passing pasture to reach the town centre:

…and passing the Keswick Parish Church of St John, on the way:

The market is large and takes over much of the town centre:

There are many excellent shops and the market provided an extensive range of goods and fresh produce (the strawberries were excellent):

There was a really nice relaxed vibe, with street musicians and many interesting craft stalls:

Apparently the local swimming pool is under threat:

An amazing array of treats available in this shop:

Derwentwater is a short walk from the town centre:

We saw this guy playing in various locations in the town. The piano is on wheels.
