Montpon-Ménestérol – Drought, Smoke and Fire

24th August 2022

Much of France, like some parts of England, is dry and parched following months of drought.

Just after midday, we noticed a column of smoke to the south of our house in France. Apparently, there has been a spate of fires in the area, these being the work of a suspected arsonist.

It is hard to believe that anyone would be so stupid as to do this, but the fire had apparently started in four sites simultaneously, all within a 20 hectare woodland area close to the A89 autoroute. With the tinder-dry, already parched landscape, all four fires quickly took hold. With the prevailing wind, it looked like the flames were heading in our direction.

From the road a little way along from our house, we were able to see the aerial response. This involved two planes and a helicopter which repeatedly dropped water on the fires.

According to the local news, several houses had needed to be evacuated and over 60 fire fighters were involved, in addition to the two planes and helicopter. People were allowed to return to their homes around 5:30pm after the fires had been safely put out.
