Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire

Sunday 23rd October 2022

On the final day of our Staffordshire trip, a rainy start to the day led us to look for a place to visit which offered indoor interest, so we chose Kedleston Hall, near Derby which is owned by the National Trust.

The front of Kedleston Hall

Built by the Curzon family and designed by Robert Adam around the middle of the 18th century, it was never intended to be a home, rather to show off the wealth and importance of the newly created Baron Nathaniel Curzon.

It is abundantly clear that the intention was to impress the visitor to the house. This is the room that important guests would enter first:

Guests would then move on to this circular room, which was modelled on the Parthenon in Rome. Even the doors are shaped to maintain the circular shape of the room.

A very ornately decorated room with stunning furniture is next on the tour. The chandelier is amazing.

Just your average suburban sofa (there are four of them in this room)

The picture gallery also reflects the circular theme with even the floorboards shaped to match.

The Picture gallery

An impressive bed, but I don’t imagine it to be comfortable to sleep in.

Just behind the house, there is a church which pre-dates the house and contains the remains of many of the Curzon family.

The grounds are extensive and have clearly been landscaped to present a fine view from the house.

Post-script: Our attendance over the weekend at the CCC Photo Group meeting, entailed entering prints in a fun competition. This time the theme was “humour” and congratulations to Alison, whose image of me holding up a rock at Brimham Rocks, achieved second place. My images came nowhere; clearly no sense of humour.
