Chipping Norton and Chedworth Roman Villa.

Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th July 2024

We spent a couple of nights at Nuholme Caravan Site, near Chipping Norton in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, where the Cambrian & Wyvern Region of the Camping and Caravanning Club were holding a temporary holiday site.

Wednesday 17th July, Chipping Norton

The small market town of Chipping Norton grew on the back of the Cotswolds medieval wool trade which made the area one of the wealthiest in the country. We had caught the local circular bus “The Chippy” into town from the site.

Just outside the town is the Bliss Tweed Mill, built by William Bliss in 1872. It closed in 1980 and has since been turned into residential apartments:

Just near here is an antiques shop which had a wide variety of interesting goods for sale when we visited. Well worth the visit.

Thursday 18th July, Chedworth Roman Villa

We visited Chedworth Roman Villa on our way south towards Cirencester.

A reconstruction model of the villa

The villa is one of the largest in Britain and was discovered in 1864. The Victorians rebuilt and capped many of the walls and then opened it to the public.

The building to the left is the on-site Victorian museum

It is believed that it was the residence of a very wealthy Romano-Briton and it is now in the ownership of the National Trust who have created some covering buildings to enable some of the mosaic floors to be displayed, though there are others that have been re-buried to protect them.
