Saturday 14 – Sunday 15th September 2024
So another adventure begins. After staying on Saturday night on a 5-van campsite near to the small Kent village Pluckley and meeting up with our friends Jeeves and Michelle (not forgetting Layla, the Cockapoo), we have crossed the channel from Dover to Calais and are staying on an aire at Bergues, around 50km south east of Calais.

Bergues:
The small town of Bergues has a long history, but like many in this area, it suffered greatly in the second world war.

It is a fortified town with ramparts and covered gates:

We happened to visit on the 80th anniversary of the town’s liberation by allied troops on the 16th September 1944, around three months after D-day.

There was a brass band concert in the town square along with some beautifully restored old vehicles.

We had a wander around the ramparts which have a moat around the outside.

“La Nekerstore” is not a place to keep your underwear, it is a flanking tower and watergate, part of the town defences, dating from the first quarter of the 15th century.

The church is quite impressive:

The ceramic, 3D Stations of the Cross are all beautifully made:

Tomorrow we head further south.
Visiting with a Motorhome:
Pluckley, near Ashford, Kent: Sorry, no pictures, but the site, Watercress Farm, was excellent. Just basic facilities, but a quiet and level field with hard-standing, disposal facilities and an electric hook-up for £20/night.
Bergues, Nord, France: We stayed, free of charge on the motorhome aire, which has capacity for at least 25 units. No services, but there are facilities for getting rid of rubbish. It is a level cinder hardstanding with easy access to the town centre.
