European Trip 26: Alsfeld, Germany.

Thursday 17th October 2024 (day 34)

The small and idyllic town of Alsfeld, is as picturesque as they come.

A house near to the overnight park-up, dated 1701

An old tower, which is at the start of the old town, has a stork’s nest on top. It looks like a platform has been created for it. Of course, the storks have flown by this time of year.

Leonhardsturm

With a large “old town” which is mainly built of timber-framed, dwellings and shops, there is hardly a straight line to be seen anywhere. They are also highly decorated:

Stumpf-Haus

The building below, has two different dates on the facia. 1904 and 1946. I assume the latter of these was due to rebuilding after the war.

Minnigerode-Haus which is the Regional Museum
The gable-end of this house was covered in painted, wooden shingles

Apparently and purely as a coincidence, we found that on a Thursday, the townsfolk gather in the market square for a bit of a social get together, with live music, beer and food.

Marktplatz which was much busier by the time we left.
Fountains in the market square
Two glasses of “Dorf Bräu Haus” Thanksgiving Beer, Thank you!
A little later, with the beer all but gone.

Of course we had to get into the spirit of the event and some German visitors soon joined us at our table. And very nice folk they were; we enjoyed their company despite the language problems (with some assistance from the young woman who was with them, who spoke good English).

We passed this Halloween decorated bungalow on the way back to the park-up.

Our park-up for the night, is a huge stellplatz with room for dozens of motorhomes. The fee is just 5€ per night with extra for water/electricity. Quiet and level, about 10 minutes walk to town, just the job.
