Portugal Trip 2: To Bragança, Portugal

Monday 7th April 2025

After doing some grocery shopping in the local supermarket, we headed south west towards Portugal and our next overnight stay at Bragança Castle.

The route was mainly via motorway, but we took a diversion near to the Spain/Portugal border to take in some of the more scenic views.

The motorhome aire at Bragança Castle is in a great location where the parking areas are tiered and all have a great view as a result. There are also free water and sanitation facilities.

After lunch we walked up to the castle to explore. It is quite large and there is almost a small town within the walls, including a number of bars and restaurants.

Bragança Castle Keep and inner bailey.
The TV mast looks a bit out of place on one of the castle towers.

The castle keep and inner bailey are closed on a Monday, but we saw plenty by walking around the walls and exploring the narrow streets. The town provides free accommodation in the pilgrim’s hostel, for those on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

There are also two museums within the castle walls, both closed on Mondays. The keep has a military museum and there is also a mask museum with a souvenir shop next-door, displaying many masks for sale. There is also a chapel.

As is usual for castles, it is built on top of a hill and affords great views of the town and the surrounding countryside.

Of course we had to find a cafe to enjoy a cold beer and chill a little whilst watching the world go by:

Cheers and TTFN.
