Portugal Trip 3; Miranda do Douro

Tuesday 8th April 2025

Today, we have taken the scenic route to a small town right next to the Spanish border, Miranda do Douro. On our way, we took time to stop and explore the area around a high bridge over a mountain stream which had carved a deep valley.

Alongside the road, just before the bridge, there is a cave with a shrine. Unfortunately I do not know who the statue depicts, but it appears to be a bishop with a crozier and mitre.

Our park up for the night is right alongside the town walls and it overlooks the Rio Douro, which at this point marks the border, so we can look over the river into Spain.

The town is built around a medieval castle, which of course, is on a hill.

The town has made a feature of traditional styles of dress, and in addition to a mural and a pair of bronzes in the town square, there is an exhibition in the tourist office:

There is also a cathedral which we visited:

Some of the ornamentation is quite grotesque:

Just playing with my camera by the motorhome, I saw a beautiful large butterfly which I could not resist photographing. I am not sure what it is, but it is clearly a swallow tail.

That’s all. TTFN.
