Portugal Trip 14: Vila Real de Santo António (3), Monte Gordo, Tavira and Faro.

Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th April 2025

On Saturday, we chose to have a cycle ride down as far as we could go, to the south eastern-most point of Portugal, then we cycled on to Monte Gordo, a resort town with a fine beach, about 5 Km away, which also has a fishing industry.

Vila Real de Santo António:

A Spoonbill seen feeding on the way.
A passing small yacht, enjoying a good breeze.
The Farolim de Vila Real de Santo António
The International Bridge, looking back up the Guadiana River.

Monte Gordo:

Monte Gordo is a pleasant enough place, but not really our scene. There is a fishing industry, but this seems to be overshadowed by tourism and the many, large hotels along the main street. It has a good beach and many restaurant/cafes accessed via boardwalks, near to the sea.

Fishing equipment on the beach.
It is going to be much busier during the season.

Tavira:

Tavira is a pleasant town, built on both banks of a river. Much of the town centre is undergoing restoration building work, which did nothing for the appearance, but it does have its merits:

A craft fair
A turtle and koi carp in the pond around the bandstand.

Faro:

Of course Faro is where most people who are visiting the Algarve, arrive. The main airport is on the outskirts of the town.

We parked very near to the old town, which has a number of old and interesting buildings. The Old Town is in fact walled and access is via one of several arched gates:

Arco da Vila

There is an Irish Bar, “Irish Salt” and nearby you could buy a “Sexy” pina colada.

Some of the property in the area is in quite a poor state of repair and has been covered with graffiti:

Faro Marina

That is for today. See u Later. TTFN.
