Portugal Trip 15: Benagil, near Carvoeiro, Algarve

Monday 21st April 2025

Heading further west, on our way to spending the night near Portimão, we made our way to the coast, to take a look at the famous Algarve cliffs, caves and coves near Carvoeiro. It was very difficult to find somewhere to park with a motorhome, but we did finally manage it, before taking to the cliff-top path.

Cliff-top path

Our walk took us past a beautiful sandy cove, which was accessed via steps, cut through the rock in a tunnel:

Also here, is a rock stack standing in the middle of the cove. We saw a man, who had apparently climbed the rock in bare feet, subsequently jump into the sea:

The path became quite strenuous in places:

The rock formations are amazing. The coastline here is made up of layers of sandstone and limestone. This means that the rock is harder and softer in different layers. The action of both sea and fresh-water on the rocks, has left them eroded in a very picturesque way.

The sea has exploited soft areas in particular, to create caves, one of which we saw had collapsed, so you could see down into it:

The caves are visited constantly by tourist boats, which take passengers through the natural tunnels and caves:

There are some beautiful cliff-top homes too:

We saw some very nice flora and fauna along the way.

Our park-up for the night is on a private site, at Parchal, just the other side of the river Arade from Portimao. It will serve the purpose, but it is a bit dishevelled. The site is overlooked by a huge “Staples” sign which is occupied by three stork nests, all with young.

That is it for now. See u later. TTFN.
