Another day, very much marred by the weather, but we did manage to have a look around the small town of Villaviciosa, where we had intended to spend the night. After I had put yesterday’s blog post to bed at Cudillero, we noticed that there would be a possible sunset:

Villaviciosa is a little inland from the coast near a river estuary, and about an hour’s drive east of our last stop. The town celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2018.

We parked-up in what appears to be a new motorhome parking area with free services. Nearby, there are some donkeys and ponies, which I felt sorry for as they were all tethered, rather than being able to mix with each other. The field was not enclosed.

It is fair to say, that no place looks good in the pouring rain and there is an “old town” which has a number of old buildings, some of which were in excellent condition.

….but others, I fear, need a lot of TLC. These stone-built dwellings are struggling a bit, even from the front.

…viewed from behind, things are clearly worse, especially the large, ornate building on the right (above):

We visited a couple of old churches. The Church of Santa María de la Oliva was built in the late 13th century and is still visited by pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago (northern).

We also visited a 17th century church which was constructed exclusively with Roman arches. There were no gothic, pointed jobs. That made the church feel spacious and modern, even though it is over 300 years old.

We definitely did not see all that Villaviciosa has to offer, but as the rain resumed with a vengeance we decided to move on, taking on a challenging road in a south-easterly direction, to the town of Cangas de Onis, where we are currently parked, with the rain beating down. We plan to explore the town further in the morning.

On our way, we did stop at a viewpoint (the Mirador del Fito) and got wet again, looking at the views. They are fine views though:

That is all for today. See u Later and TTFN.
