Belton House, Grantham

Friday 15th August 2025

We are staying just a few miles north of Grantham, so chose to pay a visit to the large, National Trust property of Belton Estate, which includes the house, built in 1685 by the extremely wealthy Sir John Brownlow, whose descendants lived in the house for the following 300 years.

Although relatively modest in size (still enormous by modern standards, of course), Belton House provided the family with an opulent lifestyle including a huge library, with books dating back as far as 1473.

The decoration in this room is wood painted to look like marble.

There are also some interesting pieces of old furniture.

…and some extremely high, four poster beds.

The Chinese bedroom is interesting, with hand-painted wallpaper:

It is fair to say that the gardens were not looking at their best. Probably due to the shortage of rainfall and the time of year.

Generations of the Brownlow family are buried in the church, just at the end of the garden:

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Belton

That is all for now. See-u-later and TTFN.

  1. Hi, can I ask which site you stayed at near Grantham, we’re taking Saffie (our new Deffleth) there in September or October.

I knew you were away as my morning run takes me passed Fufu when you’re home.

    1. Hi Tina
We stayed at Welbourn Village Hall, which is not a regular site. It was a meet of the Camping and Caravanning Club Photo Group. Blog post to follow.
If you are a member of the CCC or Caravan and Motorhome Club, you could look at the small 5 van sites which are affiliated to these organisations. I can recommend looking at the phone app “Search for Sites” which is brilliant.
      Hope this helps, regards,
      Peter.
