Freiburg and Triberg, Black Forest, Germany

Sunday 12th and Monday 13th October 2025

Our journey in a generally northwards direction continues, but via the Black Forest in southern Germany.

Sunday – Freiburg:

The busy city of Freiburg has some interesting historic buildings, including towers at the old city gates and a huge medieval cathedral.

Most of the streets have a channeled stream running through, some with places to cross. There are also some interesting designs in the cobblestones of the pavements.

Being a Sunday, most of the city centre retail shops were closed, but this is a university city and so there is a vibe which is nice to experience with lots of young people hanging about and just apparently “chilling”.

Amazingly and fortunately the cathedral escaped almost unscathed from the second world war. It is an astonishing building. I never cease to be amazed at the skill and craftsmanship of the middle ages.

We stayed for the night, on a large motorhome park-up area, next to the football stadium for 15€. The price included toilet cassette emptying and fresh water, but were unable to empty the waste water, as their holding tank was full. So was ours, as we had chosen not to queue for the services in our last park-up, at Belfort.

Monday – Triberg:

The trip to Triberg was uneventful.

We passed through some pretty countryside, then over a pass before descending back down to the town. Our park-up for the night does not have waste-water emptying facilities, so we were directed to the motorhome service point near the railway station, where we found that, due to the overly full waste-water tank and the steep roads, we had got a soggy bathroom. We live and learn!

Triberg is a small, but pretty town with some attractive buildings.

Cuckoo Clocks, all different, priced at up to 3,000€

We visited the Black Forest Museum, which is excellent. As the town is famous for its clock making, inevitably there is much about that, but there is also some automata and many wood carvings.

Automata in the museum.

The town is a cuckoo clock making and tourism hotspot, but its main claim to fame is the waterfalls at the top of the town. They are apparently the highest in the country.

We also spotted some local wildlife:

A “Red” Squirrel.

A bit more about the camp site we are staying at. It is a “glamping” site, with many caravans and other things, inside an old factory with a car park on top. Sounds great? …well I think it is. There has been some real imagination gone into this and it must make an original experience. I particularly liked the Yellow Submarine. The showers and toilets are all excellent too.

That is all for today. TTFN and see-u-later.
