Burg Eltz Castle and Andernach, Germany

Wednesday 22nd October 2025

Again moving on north, we have stopped for the night at Andernach, on the banks of the Rhine, but more of that later.

Burg Eltz Castle:

We visited this beautiful and amazingly tall castle en-route. It was very busy and the only way people could go inside was with a guided tour, which fortunately had an English language option. It was one tour after another, with multiple guides herding groups of around 35 through just a part of the large castle building.

What we did see, was clearly only a part of the whole, but it was impressive:

The treasury houses many very valuable items, including these:

Andernach:

The river is very busy here with a great deal of barge traffic. There is also a busy railway line on the far side of the river, with hugely long goods trains.

The town of Andernach is a walled settlement, with huge gates and a castle as a part of the defences:

There are also a number of interesting buildings, including the very quirky Stadtmuseum:

And a strange, statue, which has a head under its arm, which “spits”:

The shopping centre is pleasant enough with a couple of names we used to see on the British high street.

That is it for today. TTFN and see-u-later.
