Motorhome Sites Visited

A brief review of sites we have used on our trips

The comments here are purely based on our experiences at the time of the visit. No recommendations are made or intended.

Yorkshire Coast

17th April (3 nights) – Wold Farm Campsite, Bempton Ln, Flamborough, Bridlington YO15 1AT, UK

Grass pitches with electric if required. A very peaceful site with good facilities, handy by cliff-top path to both Bempton Cliffs RSPB site and Flamborough Head. Excellent. We would definitely stay there again.

20th April (2 nights) – Scarborough Camping & Caravanning Club, Field Lane, Burniston Rd, Scarborough YO13 0DA, UK

A well managed site, typical of the CCC. A cliff-top walk from the site to Scarborough. Happy to return in the future.

22nd April (2 nights) – Hooks House Farm, Whitby Road, Whitby YO22 4PE, UK

A small, privately owned site which appeared well managed. Some hardstanding with electric, but many pitches sloping. A steep descent into Robin Hoods Bay, but wonderful views from the site. Happy to return.

24th April (2 nights) – Shawn Rigg Certificated Site, Whitby YO22 5HL, UK

A 5-pitch site which is at the entrance to a very small static caravan site. Electricity, water and disposal only. A descent walk into Whitby, but on the flat, alongside the railway line. Nice and quiet. Would be happy to return.

Dorset and Devon Coast

8th May (2 nights) – Higher Edgarley House, Glastonbury, BA6 8BG.

The site is excellent and is convenient for both the Tor and Glastonbury town centre which is around a 15 minute walk away. Good facilities and a friendly reception. Would definitely stay there again.

10th May (2 nights) – Newlands Holiday Park, Stonebarrown Lane, Charmouth, DT6 6RB.

This is a large site with many static holiday homes to the rear. There is a club (closed at the time, due to Covid) and Spar shop onsite, which we did not use, but might have been handy. We were parked on a terraced hilside with good level hardstanding, but the access might have been tight for a large unit. Good views, but the road might disturb some. Happy to return.

12th May (2 nights) – Manor Farm, Seaton Down Hill, Seaton, EX12 2JA.

A large caravan site, on a hillside with roads around a one-way system. Motorhomes are asked to park along the top road and whilst this is level, it means that other users of the site pass your unit quite closely. Servicing facilities were not easily accessible and appeared to be an afterthought. Severe speed-bumps throughout the site, are not very friendly to negotiate. On the whole, it could have been better. Not so keen to return here, but might do so at a pinch.

14th May (2 nights) – Ramslade Caravan and Motorhome Club Site, Stoke Gabriel, Totnes, TQ9 6QB

A nice, quiet site with facilities that are up to standard for a CMC site. A reasonable walk into Stoke Gabriel, mostly downhill. Lovely location, if a long way from Totnes. Happy to return in future.

16th May (1 night) – Dartmouth Camping and Carvanning Club Site, Stoke Fleming, Dartmouth, TQ6 0RF.

Another site which is up to standard for the CCC. We used the handy Park and Ride to get into Dartmouth itself, which was £5 for the day, for up to 2 people. We would have had difficulty parking in the town. Happy to stay there again.

17th May (1 night) – Ilton Farm Campsite, Salcombe, Kingsbridge, TQ7 3BZ.

A well-organised site with recently refreshed facilities. All done to a high standard. Level hardstanding pitches. A two-mile downhill walk to Salcombe, but worth it. Definitely would like to return.

18th May (2 nights) – Mount Folly Farm, Bigbury on Sea, TQ7 4AR.

Basically a hillside, grass pitches but with electric hook-up. Amazing views from the site but quite a pull uphill back from the village. Friendly people on this site which caters mainly for tents, in season this will be very popular. New facilities. Happy to return, but will avoid high season.

20th May (1 night) – Valley View Farm, Brook Lane, Tavistock, PL1 9DP.

A camping site with room for just a few motorhomes or caravans. Made to feel very welcome. Level hardstanding pitches. Close to the town and supermarkets, but Tavistock not very friendly for motorhomers, so sadly might not be returning.

21st May (1 night) – Minnows Touring Park, Tiverton, EX16 7EN.

A nice site with easy access to good walking along the canal towpath. We didn’t explore locally though, due to the dreadful weather. I would like to return to explore further and would happily stay here again.

22nd May (1 night) – Sharpness Dockers Social Club, The Docks, Sharpness, GL13 9UN.

A really good find. plenty of space and just £5 a night. A warm welcome in the clubhouse with reasonably priced food and good beer. Limited facilities, but there is water and waste disposal. Would definitley stay there again.

Bodnant and Llanrwst, North Wales

28th May (2 nights) – The Holland Arms, Llanrwst Rd, Abergele LL22 8BG

A pub stopover. Free to stay, but of course it is expected that you eat and/or drink in the bar. Needed to book a table at the time of booking the stay, but this was due to Covid requirements. In the middle of nowhere, but a warm welcome and excellent food. Good prices too. Not too far from the coastal resorts and Bodnant Gardens, but you do need to drive. More than happy to return.

Flamborough Head, Yorkshire Coast

10th June (3 nights) – Wold Farm Campsite, Bempton Ln, Flamborough, Bridlington YO15 1AT, UK

A real find. Everything just as good as when we last visited on 17th April 2021. See what we said then, above.

Horton in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire

25th June (1 night) – The Helwith Bridge Inn, Austwick Rd, Horton in Ribblesdale, Settle BD24 0EH

A popular pub stopover with a level car park that can apparently take up to around 20 motorhomes. There is camping also in the field adjacent. Nothing wrong with the site and the usual requirement of patronising the pub applied, but our experience of the food and service mean that we will not be returning.

26th June (1 night) – Lodge Barn, Lodge Road, Langcliffe, Settle BD24 9LT

We had contacted the owner on the day, as we had needed to change our plans, not wanting to stay for a second night at the Helwith Bridge Inn. He was very helpful and fitted us inbetween a couple of caravans whose owners were not going to be occupying that evening. A nice site with new facilities and a fine view over the valley towards the river and a reeasonable walk into Settle. Looking forward to returning.

Lynn Peninsula, Wales

1st July 2021 (4 nights) – Caerau Farm, Aberdaron.

A great spot, just a the top of a steep climb out of the village. New facilities and a well maintained site with hardstanding but now only open to caravan seasonal pitches. Probably unable to return, but there are many other sites in this area.

Clapham, North Yorkshire

24th July 2021 (2 nights) – Camping and Caravan Club Temporary Site

An excellent venue with two large and flat fields, on the edge of the village. Minimal facilties and the fresh water supply is on the other side of the road in the field, but you can stretch a hose over the wall. Many good walks from the village.

Milnthorpe, Cumbria

1st August 2021 (2 nights) – Crooklands CC Club Temporary Site

A mostly level field (near the canal anyway), some background noise from the motorway and nearby roads, but not intrusive. Directly opposite the Crooklands Hotel. Fresh water and Elsan disposal on site and to a good standard. No other facilities.

Great Budworth, Near Northwich, Cheshire

5th August 2021 (1 night) – Heron’s Nest, CC Club Temporary Site.

An excellent site with fine views over Budworth Mere. Basic facilities and the field is on a bit of a slope, but not too severe. Close to the charming village of Great Budworth, but the road has no pavement and it is quite busy.

Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales

6th August 2021 (2 nights) – TNR Outdoors, Llangollen

A level car park right next to the river. Paid £6 per person per night. Fresh water, but no other facilities. The car park gets busy over the weekend, so you can get stuck, but no problem really as it is within a reasonable walking distance of the town. We would stay there again, but need to make alternative arrangements regarding elsan disposal.

Kettlewell, North Yorkshire

21st August 2021 (3 nights) – Kettlewell, CC Club Temporary Site

Another gem of a site in a level field with fine views, close to the village centre. Fresh water and elsan disposal provided. Definitely will be returning.

Langcliffe and Settle, North Yorkshire

28th August 2021 (3 nights) – Lodge Barn, CC Club Temporary Site, Langcliffe

We had stayed on Lodge Barn previously as a regular stay, but the CC Club temporary site was at the back of the commercial site, in a level field alongside the River Ribble. It was well organised, despite being quite busy. Fresh water and elsan disposal available, the only slight issue was the site of the fresh water tap, in the field entrance gateway. Happy to return.

Hawes, North Yorkshire

10th September 2021 (2 nights) – Hawes Farmers’ Auction Mart

A large and reasonably level area of hardstanding with basic but adequate facilities including elsan disposal and toilets (no showers). Overnight stays are £10, payable via an honesty box. An easy walk to the town centre. Would definitely stay there again.

Kendal, Cumbria

17th September 2021 (3 nights) – Spital Farm Caravan Site (CCC temporary site)

A level field alongside the road, but quiet overnight. As this was a CCC temporary site, there were limited facilities, but it is just a 20 minute walk into the town. Happy to return.

Hawes, North Yorkshire

3rd December 2021 (3 nights) – Hawes Farmers’ Auction Mart (CCC club meeting)

A return to Hawes Auction Mart, but this time as part of the CCC club meet. Nothing to add really, see 10th Sept for more info.

Nantwich, Cheshire

10th December 2021 (2 nights) – The Willows Touring Park, Nantwich, CW5 8AB

A privately run site with good facilities. A bit of a treck into Nantwich and taxis generally unavailable unl;ess booked well in advance. We have stayed here before, but some time ago. Would definitely return.

Lincoln, Lincolnshire

29th December 2021 (1 night) – The Cherry Tree Pub, Cherry Willingham, Lincoln, LN3 4AS

A nice pub with a large and quiet car park (at this time of year at least). The car park backs onto playing fields. No charge to stay, but you are obviously expected to become a customer. Normally serves food, but not when we were there, between Christmas and New Year. An excellent Chinese takaway adjacent. Happy to return.

Swaffham, Norfolk

30th December 2021 (3 nights) – Breckland Meadows Touring Park, Swaffham, PE37 7PT

Good facilities and only a short walk into the town. Quiet site (adults only). The only slight problem was that the hardstanding pitches were separated from the access road with grass, which at this time of the year was rapidly becoming muddy. Poor lighting too. Probably fine at other times of the year. Would stay there again.

Lincoln, Lincolnshire

2nd Jan 2022 (1 night) – The Angler’s Pub, Saxilby, Lincoln

A nice pub which is part of the Britstops scheme. Free parking overnight on a quiet carpark, providing you become a customer. They do not serve food, but have a good selection of beers. There is a local chip shop and and excellent Chinese takaway if needed. Would definitely stay again.

Ingleton, North Yorkshire

14th Jan 2022 (2 nights) – The Three Horseshoes Pub, Ingleton

A warm welcome and good food at a reasonable price, though food is only available on certain days until early evening. We stayed on the car park. No facilities, but quiet and central to the town. Happy to return.

Skipton, North Yorkshire

28th Jan 2022 (2 nights) – Skipton Auction Mart Car Park

A meet organised by the CCC Leeds District Association. A slightly sloping site with basic facilities. Social meet in the onsite cafe. Handy for the town with a pleasant off-road walk through the park and along the canal bank. Would definitely stay there again.

Warton, Lancashire

13th Feb 2022 (2 nights) – Warton Cricket Club Car Park

A meet organised by the CCC Lakeland District Association who used the cricket club clubhouse for a social meet-up on the Friday and Saturday evenings. The site is next to the west coast mainline, which is quite busy but did not disturb us, despite being pitched alongside it. Warton village is about half a mile away, but the road is busy and has no footpath. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the stay and would happily return.

Pooley Bridge, Cumbria

19th Feb 2022 (2 nights) – Waterfoot Caravan Park, A592 Ullswater, Penrith CA11 0JF

Visited before the park was opened for the season, with CCC Lakeland DA. An excellent site which is around 15 minutes walk from the village centre. All facilities provided and reasonably level gravel pitches with water and drainage to each. Prices when open, £25 low season to £40 peak. Would happily return.

Sandbach, Cheshire

4th Mar 2022 (2 nights) – Fields Farm Fisheries, 150A Congleton Rd, Sandbach, CW11 4TE

This is a small site which is affiliated to the Camping and Caravanning Club. Level hardstanding piches with good facilities including electric hook-up and not too far to walk to the centre of Sandbach. £21 per night. The only draw back is noise from the M6 motorway which is a couple of fields away. This was our second visit here and we would be happy to return.
