A late change in plan, due to the inclement weather and recent torrential downpours, meant that we have parked for the weekend at Hawes Farmers’ Auction Mart car park for £10 a night which affords hardstanding, so Fufu won’t sink-in axle-deep.

On arrival, we parked up in a large space between two other motorhomes, before deciding to move across to fill-up with fresh water. On our return, one of our potential neighbours had placed a large traffic cone in the space as he didn’t want anyone parking as close as 12 feet away. He suggested we find a space further down the car park, as we were apparently impinging on his freedom to enjoy his motorhome as he would like. He had set out a little encampment, which was the far side of his van from where we were planning to park, but hey-ho, who wants to have a neighbour like him, so we moved. Some people!

After a cup of tea, we explored the small, but pretty village of Hawes which is set in beautiful countryside.

The village has decorated much of the main street with knitted “sculptures”. The first we noticed were outside The Board Inn, where one of the tables outside was occupied by Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter, having a tea party.

Walking on further, we came across further examples of the knitter’s art:

There is no mistaking the fact that we are in Yorkshire:

The trains stopped running to Hawes many years ago, but one appears to have been stranded there.

There is also evidence of mining and lead ore extraction.
