North Yorkshire (3): Thorp Perrow Arboretum

Fri 3rd June 2022

Thorp Perrow Arboretum is only a couple of miles or so from the campsite at Bedale. We planned to spend the full day there, so we took Fufu along.

View over the lake towards the formal garden near the house

On arrival, we were informed that there would be a falconry demonstration starting imminently, so we set off towards the venue at the far end of the arboretum. What we had not realised, this was a good 15 minutes walk away.

We missed about half of the demonstration, but did see a couple of owls flying.

Barn Owl
A Great Grey Owl

There were also a number of other birds in this area:

Ferrugenous Hawk (female)
A Kookaburra

Next to the aviary, there is a small mammal area:

A Meercat on watch
The Wallaby’s were very tame

The main attraction of Thorp Perrow is however, the trees, which are set in the landscaped extended garden of the house:

Lime Avenue

The Acer Glade area is a favourite:

On Kate’s Island
The Monument
The Acorn
The Bothy (actually an educational facility, entrance on the other side)

There was also a nice sense of humour in evidence:

No swimming
The Croc (well its head, anyway)
These ducklings better beware

There was also good evidence of gnomes in the area:

Gnobody home
A gnome at …err ghome.
Gnome fishin’ …instead of just a wishin’ Oh, yeh! (that shows my age!)

The gnomes clearly come in various sizes, because these are never going to fit him.
