Lyme Park, Cheshire

Thursday 20th July 2023

A slight change of plan meant that we could visit Lyme Park on our way to Cromford for the next stage of our trip.

Lyme Park is a large estate near Stockport, Cheshire. It is managed by the National Trust and comprises a deer park, formal gardens and a large mansion house which is a grade 1 listed building.

The estate was in the ownership on one family for exactly 600 years, from 1346 until 1946 when it was given to the National Trust. The house is later, being built initially in the late 16th century with later modifications in the early 18th century.

The Main Entrance

Visitors go through the main entrance archway, to the courtyard, entering the house up the stairs.

There are many beautifully decorated rooms with ornate plasterwork.

Period costumes are available if you want to look the part.

The house has a number of formal gardens:

The Rose Garden
The Italian Garden
Fountain in the orangery

On a previous visit, in October 2005, we explored some of the estate’s woodland paths:

  1. I spent lots of time there when visiting my grandfather in New Mills. Didn’t know you were into Colin Firth! 😂
