After a stay of two weeks, we moved on from Calpe today, heading about 160km up the coast to Sagunto, which is a large fortified town with castle walls. Some distance away from the town centre, there is the port, a large marina and some beautiful beaches. We are staying near these beaches for the night, but more about Sagunto later.
Calpe
We spent New Year’s Day and yesterday mostly “chilling”, planning our onward journey, sorting out the van ready for the journey today and shopping etc.
On New Year’s Day, we were entertained by one of the other motor-homers (German, I think) who wandered the site playing his accordion for other fellow-countrymen. Unfortunately I do not have the ear for this type of music and every new song sounded just like the previous one. He appeared to be very skilled as a musician however.

I later spent half an hour or so photographing the wading birds on the shallow salt lake. It is interesting that despite this being an old salt-production area, wildlife adapts and returns.

These are wild GreaterFlamingos, which have settled there, along with quite a few Grey Herons. The grey flamingos are young birds which have not yet accumulated their colouring.

On our last evening in Calpe, we walked along the promenade to enjoy a sangria at one of the bars and watch the sun going down. It was windy and there were some quite good waves; we were entertained by a kite surfer fighting with his kite.

Sagunto
Although the town itself, would be quite attractive for a wander around, our park-up for the night is some distance away, at Canet d’en Berenguer, so we chose to spend our time here taking a cycle ride up and down the extent of the sea-front. We are about 200 metres from the marina with its sea wall:

Further on towards the harbour, there were several aqua-planing surf/kite boarders, apparently “flying” skilfully up and down in the surf. Apparently this is called “wingfoiling” (every day is a school day).

It is a beautiful stretch of beach and the weather was glorious with nice sunshine, 22 degrees Celsius and a warm breeze. A far cry from the weather back home, I believe.

Visiting with a Motorhome
We identified the stop-over using the “Search for Sites” app. The area used by motorhomes is a large, mostly flat area, but there are no services (a toilet block, nearby on the sea-front, was closed at the time of our visit). Some low-hanging tree branches, but not a major problem.
