European Trip 19: Leaving Austria, north to Slapy, Czechia.

Thursday 10th October 2024 (day 27)

On our way out of Gaming, we passed what appears to be a heritage, narrow gauge railway with some carriages and trucks at the end of some sidings beyond the station. They appear to be in need of some TLC, but many had clearly been extensively restored.

We were able to look through the window of one of the carriages at the platform:

We did not see any locomotives, but I assumed they would be safely in the shed.

The Station Master’s house?

Before leaving Austria, we had to cross the mighty River Danube, via the top of what appeared to be a hydro-electric installation.

The River Danube

The journey onward through to Slapy was fairly uneventful, through very rural, if not actually picturesque parts of both countries, much of it through forested areas. It didn’t help that it started raining as soon as we crossed the border. The roads, however, are excellent and we made good progress.

The village of Slapy

The village of Slapy is on the outskirts of the small town of Tabor. Although there is a fair amount of industry in the village, it remains a rural location, surrounded by fields.

Libějice station is half way between that village and Slapy.

Even the local railway station is in a field near the village. There is a road to it, but no car park. It has a regular service and although only a single line, it is fully electrified.

The level crossing next to the station..

Our park-up for the night is at a privately owned stellplatz, just along from the local football club pitch where some repair work was being completed to the playing surface.

We appeared to be the only occupied van on the site. The owner turned up at 6pm and opened the cafe/bar where we had a drink and paid for our night’s stay. We were made to feel very welcome and fortunately, he accepted euros as we had not managed to obtain any Czech Koruna. I will need to find an ATM in the morning. about 16 € for two large beers and an overnight is very reasonable.

The owner had a roaring log burner going and a couple of local men had joined him for a drink.

Tomorrow, we head towards Prague. TTFN. See you later.
