European Trip 23: Prague day 4, Czechia.

Monday 14th October 2024 (day 31)

Today is to be our last day in Prague for this trip, so we wandered around the Old Town and the city centre for the day, with no particular agenda, taking in the sights, in particular the architecture. We got off the tram just opposite the Smetana Hall, a concert venue.

One of the things we had noticed, are the old red cars that are available for city tours. They come in many shapes and sizes:

Around the corner, we walked past the Powder Tower, but it is having some renovation work completed, so we were unable to see it properly.

The Old Town Square was worth a second look as we had missed a lot yesterday. I like the embellishments on top of the Ministry of Regional Development building:

The National Gallery building is a gem, shame about the gaudy posters:

At this point, we decided that lunch would be a good plan. We found a very nice restaurant, just off the main Old Town Square, where we were shown to a table in the cellar. You could eat outside, but this seemed really special as although they were busy, there was only one other couple dining down there.

The food and drink were excellent, and not very expensive.

Wandering on after lunch, we found a steel sculpture exhibition, which looked interesting, but we didn’t go in:

Of course there were gift/souvenir shops galore, including toy shops and a shop which claimed to mine candy:

Apparently cannabis is legal here, as it is on open sale:

Yesterday, we had looked at the Charles Bridge and its town tower, so this time we crossed over it. It is entirely pedestrian, so there are buskers, portrait artists, people in costume and many religious statues:

On the other end of the bridge is Lesser Town Bridge Tower. We climbed this tower, up a very steep, wooden staircase, to the terrace surrounding the roof (on the right, in the picture below).

After returning safely to ground level, we walked around to the Lennon Wall. This was originally created as a protest during the days of communism when John Lennon was calling for peace:

We ended our day, wandering up to the “Dancing House”. Sometimes referred to as Fred and Ginger, passing some more ornately decorated buildings along the way:

TTFN. See you Later.
