European Trip 27: Riesenbeck, Germany.

Friday 18th October 2024 (day 35)

Today was a travelling day, and at that, quite a frustrating one. We planned to be on the move for about 3 hours or so, but due to road closures, traffic, misunderstandings and sat-nav issues, it has taken us about 6 hours and we are exhausted. For this reason, today’s blog will be brief.

Fufu and friends alongside the canal.

We are staying next to the Dortmund-Ems Canal, at Riesenbeck. This is one of the major German canals which have the immense barges travelling along them. There are a couple moored-up alongside the stellplatz and we have seen others moving through. They always seem so heavily laden, almost within an inch of the gunwales.

This barge, passing through, appeared to be laden with scrap iron.
Most of the barges seem to carry a car onboard.
Some carry two cars and a boat
Heavily laden.

The stellplatz is near a road bridge over the canal, which we walked across:

View down the canal from the bridge.

Across the road, there is a garden centre and like many in the UK, they sell a huge range of goods. We were particularly impressed with the industrial range of bottled beer, mostly for sale by the crate:

We later caught a glimpse of a Swiss river-cruise ship/barge, registered in Basel passing through.

The Katharina von Bora

It costs just 8€ to stay the night. Electric hook-up is available at a further 2€ for 2 KWh. No other services are provided, except an interesting view on the outskirts of a pleasant, small but unremarkable town.

Given our need to recuperate and take a break from travelling, we plan to stay here two nights, so if the weather is kind enough, tomorrow we plan a bike ride along the canal bank. TTFN. See you later.
