European Trip 28: Riesenbeck (day 2), Germany

Saturday 19th October 2024 (day 36).

Another brief post today. It rained consistently for much of the morning, stopping only long enough for us to get some shopping done, eventually stopping around 2pm. Taking advantage of this, we chilled for a while, then later went for a cycle ride along the canal.

There is consistent barge traffic along the canal, well into the evening.
After dark, the barges use bright headlights.

This is a quite rural area and so, with the canal running through it and the autumn colours, it is quite pretty:

A couple of miles away, there is a lock. As the canal barges are huge, the lock is also huge to be able to accommodate them. We watched a barge descend through the lock:

Waiting to enter. There is another barge ascending.
On the approach with the upper gate lowered.
Moored-up and the upper gate has been raised.

The lock has a high lift, so the lock gates are quite tall.

Although this barge was quite long, it did not fill the length of the lock.

On the canal bank, we also came across an art installation which was related to the construction of the German canal network.

Rote Box – Info-Pavillon “Nasses Dreieck”
Information panels on the walls describe the history of canal building in Germany
A nearby footbridge

With the light fading, we headed back to Fufu. Tomorrow we move on further north and west. TTFN. See you later.
