North West Coast: Fox Glacier, Hokitika and Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand.

Tuesday 16th – Wednesday 17th April 2026

Tuesday and Wednesday were spent travelling up the North West Coast of the New Zealand South Island. Sadly, we had very little respite from the torrential rain, so were unable to see the Fox Glacier and the Franz Joseph Glacier, which are the main attractions on this route. All the peaks were completely obscured by cloud.

The Tasman Sea

We did stop to take in points of interest along the way.

Thunder Creek Falls

Whilst we were at Fox Glacier, where were spent a night, we walked through an area of temperate rainforest, which was amazing with all the hanging moss and tree-ferns. We returned after dark to see the glow-worms, which we loved, but sadly they were beyond photographing.

In the village of Ross, there is a a house which has a huge display of teapots of every type and design:

We enjoyed wandering around the small town of Hotikita where there was huge amounts of driftwood on beach:

There is a definite stylishness to the buildings:

Our park-up for the night at Greymouth, was on the Top 10 site, south of the centre. We dodged the rain (nearly) and had a brief wander along the beach:

Tomorrow, we plan to head back over towards the east coast.

That is it for today. TTFN and see-u-later.
