Hahei: The Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove, Coromandel, North Island, New Zealand.

Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th May 2026

Tuesday:

A long drive today, north. Not so much the distance, but the nature of the roads, up and down, tight twists and the occasional hairpin thrown in. We also had a long wait where repairs were being done to the road following several landslides.

We had planned to visit Cathedral Cove today, but we were too tired to think of doing what we believed to be a fairly strenuous walk, so we had a look around and saw “Hot Water Beach” on the map. Now there’s an alternative!

We had to dodge the rain showers, but we planned to at least get our feet wet.

Another stunning beach, this one with a difference

Yet another beach you might say, and you would be right. This one is every bit as beautiful as the others we have visited, but with the addition of hot water. I think this would be a popular addition to most beaches.

In areas of the beach, you can find hot fresh water running through the sand, to the sea. You have to be careful as in places it is very hot. People were hiring a spade and digging small bathing areas which had a mixture of hot spring water and cold seawater, but we just had a bit of a paddle!

Peter’s got his feet wet again, this time in a hot foot spa! Very pleasant.

At one point I almost scalded my feet, but it is an interesting experience to stand on hot sand whilst cold seawater washes over your feet and up your legs.

I think my expression says it all!

Wednesday:

We drove Big FeeFee (our rental motorhome) around to the Park and Ride, where we took the shuttle bus to the end of the path which runs to Cathedral Cove.

The walk was quite strenuous and involved a lot of up and downs, but the going was good. We had a few nice glimpses of the cove and other views on the way:

Cathedral Cove is a gem. Well worth the effort in getting there, the trouble is, that it is just as much effort to return, if not more.

I am not paranoid, they really do follow me around:

Are you sure you haven’t got a baguette?

The weather forecast had promised a good chance of rain, but it was glorious. As we arrived back for the bus, it did just begin to rain, but it was a welcome cool-down.

Rain heading our way.

That is all for today. TTFN and see-u-later.
