Friday 19th to Monday 22nd June 2026
We are attending a weekend meet of the Camping and Caravanning Photographic Group at Lickhill Manor Caravan Park. On the Friday, we visited Witley Court, a 17th century Manor House, greatly extended in the 19th century, but which suffered a great fire in 1937. It is currently under the care of English Heritage, which has preserved the ruins and tends the estate and gardens.

You approach the U-shaped house with wings either side, to the main impressive staircase and its pillared terrace:

During public opening hours, the fountain is activated on the hour for ten minutes:

Throughout the building, there are boards illustrating how the house looked in its heyday. It was very opulent.

The ballroom was on the first floor of one of the wings and there is nothing to be seen now. The following photograph shows it in all its glory:

The conservatory, now open to the open air, used to be completely glazed and had a very ornate roof:

Although the house was clearly impressive and it is a pity that very little is left of the original structure, it is worth remembering that the wealth of those who built it was obtained by the exploitation of thousands working people who worked in squalor in the mining industry, where life expectancy was appallingly short.

Much of the rest of the weekend was spent enjoying the surroundings and exploring photographic opportunities in and around the large caravan site.

That is all for today. TTFN and See-u-later.
